TE NGAWAI There was a record attendance at the monthly meeting of the Te Ngawai Women’s Institute. Miss Cooling gave a talk on her trip to the Franz Josef Glacier and Mrs Robertson < Fairlie > spoke on Hygiene and Prevention of Goitre. Mrs Riddel delighted the company with pianoforte solos. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Connor and Mrs Baxter, who are ill. The competitions, which were judged by the visitors, resulted as follows: Bowl flowers: Mrs J. Guy 1, Miss Cooling 2; specimen bloom (single): Mrs Howes 1 and 2; specimen bloom (spray): Mrs Page 1, Mrs McGibbon 2; wheatmeal loaf: Mrs W. Guy 1, Miss Morrison 2: shortbread idonated to soldiers’ parcels): Mrs Tubb 1, Mrs W. Guy 2; something new from something old (to be given to Patriotic Guild): Miss Z. Elliott 1. Mrs W. Guy 2. PAREORA Mrs Whitticase presided over a fair attendance of members at the November meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute. National day proved a great success. Three minute talks were given on the following countries: Wales (Mrs Whitticase), South Africa (Mrs Moore), New Zealand (Mrs Wallace), Poland (Mrs Hoskin), Egypt (Miss J. Munro >. Among the exhibits a Transvaal flag was the centre of great interest, it being a relic of the South African War. Another interesting exhibit was a beautiful piece of tapestry of the Sphinx and Pyramids of Egypt. Each speaker wore the national costume of the country she represented. It was decided to have a picnic on the Bay instead of the usual Christmas party. The competitions resulted as follows: Bloom, Mrs Hayward; floating soup plate. Mrs Hayward: Christmas gift, under 6d, Mrs Wallace and Mrs Weenink (equal): Christmas gift, under 1/-, Mrs Wallace. SHERWOOD DOWNS Mrs Mackenzie presided at the November meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute. The committee in cnarge of the memorial garden comprises Mrs Carter and Mrs Macdonald. The Christmas party is to be held on December 21 at the Sherwood Downs Hall. Mrs Ross gave the monthly gardening notes, and Mrs Gray continued the Golden Thread with a display of rare coins and letters of historic interest. Pianoforte duets were contributed by Mesdames Ibbetson and Rayne. Miss Scott gave a comprehensive report on the half-yearly meeting held at Pleasant Point and was accorded a vote of thanks. Members were reminded of the bring and buy sales table to be held at the Christmas party in aid of soldiers’ parcels. Mrs Macdonald gave a vivid description of her visit to Samoa, and illustrated the talk with photographs, basketware, and other curios. Mrs Rayne thanked Mrs Macdonald for her most interesting talk. Hostesses were Mesdames Ibbetson and Robertson. The competitions resulted as follows: Christmas novelty, Mrs Mackenzie 1, Mesdames Anniss and Ibbetson and Miss Bray (equal) 2. Miss Laird 3; meat pie, Miss Laird 1, Mrs Cuthbertson 2, Mrs Anniss 3; bloom, Mrs Anniss 1, Miss Bray 2, Mrs Mackenzie 3. PEEL FOREST The November meeting of the Peel Forest Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs Taylor. The feature of the afternoon was a talk on “Deep-sea Fishing” by Miss Davis, who also spoke on “Women’s Institutes and how they first came to be formed.” The roll-call was “Salads Hints” and the Golden Thread “Famous Women” was taken by Mrs Brown, who spoke about Florence Nightingale. A sales table and bran dip droved very popular and helped to raise funds for the Institute. Hostesses were Mrs C. Wooding and Miss Mabel Bevan. Competitions, judged bv Mrs R. Allen and Mrs Cook, resulted as follows:—Best lettuce, Mrs Locke 1, Mrs G. Uprltchard 2, Mrs Foden 3. Bran biscuits, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Timpson 2, Mrs Foden 3. Bloom. Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Timpson 2, Miss K. Stevenson 3. Truss. Mrs Reid 1, Miss M. Foden 2, Mrs G. Upritchard 3.
