LADY GALWAY GUILD Work Of Timaru Committee One Hundred And Sixteen Cases Sent To England In a report to the Timaru Patriotic Committee the chairwoman of the Women’s Patriotic Committee, Mrs W. G. Tweedy, said that in connection with the work of the Lady Galway Guild 116 cases, comprising 21 tons 13cwt of goods had been despatched to the United Kingdom from Timaru. The following comforts had been despatched:—To the Navy League: 49 pairs sea-boot stockings, 11 scarves, 88 pullovers, 67 helmets, 100 pair socks, 14 pairs gloves, and 1 pair mittens, and to Canterbury Provincial Council, one pair of Air Force gloves, and four pairs of gloves, and 117 pairs of mittens. Three gramophones have been donated by different donors, and these had been despatched to the Canterbury Provincial Council for use on transports. One hundred gift parcels had been packed for men of the Fourth Echelon, each containing one tin of 25 cigarettes, one pair socks, one khaki handkerchief, and one stick of shaving soap. The local Lady Galway Guild was maintaining its work, and excellent garments continue to be despatched to the United Kingdom. Information recently received from the High Commissioner states that the need was now greater than ever. As permission could not be obtained from the Minister of Supplies to expenditure on new materials, the Guild Committee would be grateful for further gifts of good second-hand clothing. During her farewell visit to Timaru, Lady Galway met members of the committee and expressed her pleasure and satisfaction at the local efforts. Mrs Charteris, representative of the Timaru Labour Party Women’s Social Committee, had resigned owing to her departure from Timaru to reside in the North Island. Thanks were due to Mrs Charteris for her services. Mrs Newell had been appointed to replace her. The shop, which was to have been organised by the committee for the sale of antiques, etc., donated for the Queen Carnival funds, was abandoned, as the nucleus of the articles was withdrawn by the donor. A further request from the Canterbury Provincial Council for hussifs was received. These were promptly made up and filled, 159 being despatched.
