Annual Tournament Forrest Wins Championship Attracting about 60 competitors from points as far apart as Wellington and Gore, the returned soldiers’ annual golf tournament conducted under the auspices of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association at the Highfield links yesterday, proved one of the most successful yet held. Several prominent golfers took part and some good cards were returned. The championship for Mr G. T. Wardell’s trophy was won by G. B. Forrest, D. J. Mcßeath, the runner-up. annexing R. Wilson and Co.’s trophy. T. H. A. Richards <Windwhistle) won the New Zealand Breweries “Tim and Ru” Challenge Cup, J. C. Mason as runner-up securing Mr J. J. Duncan's trophy. The Hay Challenge Cup and the Westport Coal Company’s trophy for the gross medal handicap were won by C. J. Walsh, C. J. Webber being awarded Horwell, Osborne and McBeath’s trophy as runner-up in the first event. The Houlihan Cup for the bogey match was won by S. Hatton (Fairlie) on the count back. Mr Beckingham’s trophy for the runnerup going to W. J. Whitehead (Fairlie). Sergeant L. G. Ross (Bumham) annexed Mr D. J. Mcßeath’s trophy for the putting competition, and England, McRae’s trophy for visitors was won by J. W. Turnbull (Gore). The teams’ match was won by E. A. Scott, J. W. Turnbull, E. D. Mcßae and G. B. Forrest. Before the presentation of the trophies Mr D. J. Mcßeath, chairman of the Tournament Committee, expressed thanks to the Timaru Club for placing the links at the disposal of the returned soldiers. The course was a credit to the Grounds Committee and the groundsman, Mr R. Galloway. Mr Mcßeath expressed thanks to all who had assisted in the success of the tournament. Mr A. E. Horwell, president of the Timaru Golf Club, who acknowledged the tribute, expressed a hope that the visitors had enjoyed their day on the links, and congratulated the winners. Spirit of Comradeship Mr E. D. Mcßae, president of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association, said that they looked forward to the event each year, not so much from the social aspect, but because it was their duty to foster the spirit of comradeship which had developed during their service in the Great War. The Empire was again at war and it was their duty to promote that feeling of comradeship among their successors. Mr G. S. Cray, the only life member of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association, said that it was again his pleasing duty to present the trophies. He had been associated for many years with the Returned Soldiers’ Association by reason of his work on the Patriotic Society in which he was still keenly interested. The tournaments did much to cement the good fellowship which they had shared y ?rs ago and which continued until to-day. (Applause). After the presentation of the trophies Messrs J. W. Tennant (Waimate), H. N Scrimshaw (Wellington), T. H. A. Richards and Sergeant L. G. Ross acknowledged the hospitality on behalf of the visitors.
