SLUMP IN CRIME NEW JOB FOR LONDON’S C.I.D. (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, September 21. Hundreds of London’s C.I.D. men are to be freed from detective duties to relieve hard-worked superintendents and chief inspectors who have had little rest since the bombs began to fall. Some of these detectives—among them the Yard’s ablest men, have not had a job to deal with for some time, and the younger men in the Flying Squad have also had a quiet time. Crime statistics are now at their lowest, and as a result of conferences held between the C.I.D. chiefs and the uniformed branches, this relief plan is to be started at once. The strength of the C.I.D. is over I, detectives, about 170 of whom are at Scotland Yard with the Central Branch and with the Flying Squad, and the rest are spread over the divisions of the force. In case of necessity the nucleus of a detective staff to be retained everywhere can be augmented at once.
