HOME GUARD
Meeting Of Committee Liability For Accidents At a meeting of the Timaru Home Guard Committee, held on Wednesday, the following letter was received from the director, National Service Department:— “As you have already been advised in Circular No. 1 the Government has decided to abolish the present Home Guard enrolment form and replace it with a new form which does not require an undertaking from applicants to accept their own liability for disability. It has also been decided that the Government will accept liability for all accidents or injuries which can be established as having arisen out of membership in the Home Guard, but every care will be taken to prevent imposition or fraud. This decision will apply to members of the Home Guard, who may have given the undertaking on ■ the bld form, as well as to all who may join in the future. The procedure t 6 be adopted in respect of such claims is now being considered and details will be forwarded to you in a later circular.” The Town Clerk stated that the Area Commander had informed him that the Mount Cook Tourist Company was willing for a recruiting depot to be established in its premises. It was resolved that the offer be accepted and, if possible, the depot should be open until 6 o’clock in the evening and on Friday nights. The Town Clerk reported that the new enrolment forms were now to hand. It was resolved that Messrs Jordan and Davey of the Council staff, be appointed Attesting Officers in addition to the Town Clerk. Mr E. D. Mcßae was appointed the officer-ln-charge of the Timaru group of the Home Guard. Messrs Warner and Stewart abstained from voting, stating that they had not had an opportunity of consulting the organisation they represented. It was resolved that advice be sought from the District Commander as to the method of appointing officers other than commanders. The Group Commander stated that he proposed to call a parade on Tuesday evening next. It w'as resolved to draw attention to the fact that members of the Emergency Precautions Committee should enrol in the Home Guard as members of the Emergency Precautions Organisation. The new forms provided a heading for this Group Commander indicated that it was proposed to hold parades one night a week and that later on an occasional week-end parade would be held.
