IDEAS MUST BE ADJUSTED
AUSTRALIAN OUTLOOK ON WAR United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received This Day, 1.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, November 19. In a speech at the returned sailors and soldiers’ annual conference tod y the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie, declared that there existed in some quarters in Australia to-day a str. ng3 atmosphere of irresponsibility and failure to appreciate the full seriousness of the war situation. He had even heard it said that they could carry on in the old way in order to get their minds off the war. While Australia was no doubt making a magnificent contribution to the naval, military and air forces, he could not help feeling that the people generally would have to make a readjustment in their ideas of relative values, forego many pleasures, privileges, luxuries and extravagances, and to all their actions apply the acid test on the extent that they will help or hinder the prosecution of the war.
