FAIRUE QUEENS THANKED

Recent Carnival Complimentary Social The “queens” who took part in the recent patriotic carnival conducted in Timaru and the Mackenzie County were honoured at a complimentary social in the Aorangi Hall. The “queens” were Miss Eileen Hetherington (Air Force), Miss F. Adams (Navy), Miss Jean Horwell (Army), and Miss F. Carnie (deputy Navy Queen). The social was attended by Mr P. B. Foote, deputy-Mayor of Timaru, and chairmen and officials of the Timaru Queen Committees. When the “queens” entered the hall they were given a rousing reception by those present, who formed a guard of honour. On the stage were the chairmen of the Fairlie committees, Mr C. J. Talbot, a member of the controlling executive, and Mr D. Jeune. Mr Jeune was the first speaker and he thanked the chairmen of the committees for their work. He apologised for Mr W. Scott, who could not be present. Mr Talbot said they were proud to have the “queens” in Fairlie that night to thank them for the work they had put into raising patriotic funds. Each had had a strenuous time in the last few weeks and each in her own way had triumphed. They had not gathered to honour the winner particularly but to thank each for her work. Mr Talbot also extended thanks to the committees which worked in Fairlie. The three chairmen, Mr E. B. Taylor (Air Force), Mr W. A. B. Morton (Navy), and Mr J. P. Cunneen (Army) also spoke. They congratulated the winning “queen” and thanked the people of the district for the work they had put into raising money. Mr Foote congratulated the people of the Mackenzie for their effort which, he said, compared favourably with that of Timaru, considering the population. Each “queen” then addressed the audience and thanked the public for the support they had received. A small gresentation was made to the “queens” y Mrs Scott on behalf of the district. The evening was spent in dancing. Items were given by Mrs L. Carrol, Miss W. Argus and Mr L. Black. AMATEUR ATHLETICS

The Amateur Athletic Club’s sports, which were to have been held last night, were postponed because of rain and will be held to-night.
