WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KIMBELL At the August meeting of the Kimbell Women’s Institute, Mrs Fraser presided over a fair attendance of members, who stood in silence as a mark of respect to the relatives of the late Mr D. Cuthbertson, an early settler of the district. One new member, Mrs Bates, was elected. It was decided not to procure a parcel of returned soldiers’ goods this year. Suitable for the purpose of making children’s moccasins for the refugees, old felt hats were distributed amongst members. With the recently distributed Red Cross wool members and friends have made up 98 skeins into mittens, scarves and balaclavas, and, as well, a quantity of hospital bags have also been made. An excellent debate, “That town life is more attractive than country,” caused much amusement and interest among members, the negative side being adjudged the winner by popularvote. Those taking part were: Affirmative, Mrs G. Grcsn (leader), Mrs Sutton and Miss A. Durant; negative, Mrs J. Keenan (leaden, Mrs Fraser and Miss Waters. Mrs Goul ter acted as timekeeper. Competitions resulted as follows: Marmalade, Mrs G. Green 1, Mrs J. Keenan 2; pikelets, Mrs G. Green 1, Mrs Fraser 2; bloom, Mrs Munro 1, Miss M. Fraser 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Waters and Miss Durant.
