WOMEN’S DIVISION

SOUTHBURN BRANCH There was a good attendance of members at the August meeting of the Southburn branch of the W.D.F.U., which took the place of the annual birthday party. Mrs Murray presided and extended a welcome to the visitors and also to a new member, Mrs K. Caird. The school children had some handwork for sale, which realised 10s, the money going towards the ambulance fund. Mrs J. Chamberlain had on display some hyacinths grown in fibre. The programme for the afternoon was contributed by the junior members as follows: Songs, Miss M. Bennett and Miss R. Chamberlain; competition on members, Miss H. Murray; play reading, Misses E. Kinross, D. Bell, R. Chamberlain, M. Evans, M. Ward and M. Bennett. A feature of the afternoon was the surprise birthday cake made and donated by a member. The six candles were it by a former president (Mrs A. Ward) and blown out by another former president (Mrs J. Chamberlain). Mrs B. E. Evans was then called on to cut the cake. The results of the competitions were: Senior: Flower, Mrs Robt. Parry 1, Mrs A. Ward 2, Mrs Chamberlain and Mrs Evans (equal) 3; cream puffs, Mrs Murray 1, Mrs Kinross 2, Mrs A. Ward 3; Air Force mittens, Mrs Kinross 1, Mrs Evans 2, Mrs Chamberlain 3. Junior: Flower, Miss M. Ward 1, Miss M. Evans 2; Air Force mittens, Miss W. Bell 1, Miss M. Evans 2, Miss M. Ward 3.
