RICCARTON NOTES
SIDELIGHTS ON AMBERLEY Special to " The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. A number of horses who were seen at the Amberley meeting had not raced previously, while others were reappearing after spells of varying length. Some of them shaped well enough to suggest that they will be on the winning list before the season is much further advanced.
Trench Fight came in for a good deal of attention when he went out for the Glasnevin Handicap. He had not raced since November, and this was his first start from C. C. McCarthy’s stable. The Winning Hit horse showed no signs of excitement and he registered a good performance. He was not prominent early but he finished strongly, and he looks on the way to early success.
Synthetic showed plenty of speed in the Seadown Handicap but he faded out after going about half a mile. It was his first race this season and he should be a much better horse the next time he is started.
Sweet Mystery, having her first run since the spring, gave a very attractive showing in the Seadown Handicap. It was a seven furlong race and she looked a winner till a few strides from the post. She will pay to follow. Scarteen ran a great race to be a close second in the Seadown Handicap. He began slowly and still was at the tall of the field turning for home, after which he came with a well sustained run. He has not done a great deal of fast work since he resumed training and his performance was impressive. He should win soon, while he looks on the way to good class. The Vulture was having his first race in the Novice Stakes, and he gave a creditable showing, being in front for half a mile and still one of the leaders a furlong further on. He should be seen to more advantage before long. The two-year-old, Symbol, who had been responsible for some smart track work, did not begin well enough to have a chance in the Novice Stakes last Saturday. She finished solidly, making up a lot of ground in the last two furlongs. She had not raced previously and the experience may help her to jump away better at her next start.
Mr J. Munro had two horses racing at the Amberley meeting and each of them, shaped well, though neither of them had done much track work, following a spell. Grey Honour, who was sent home after the Grand National meeting last August, returned to Riccarton less than a fortnight ago, but apparently he had done some good exercise at his owner’s farm in Nortli Canterbury before he resumed training, as he registered an attractive performance to finish third in the Glasnevin Handicap. Grey Honour's half-brother Baldoon, was spelling for many months before he had his first race of the season in February and he had another run at Motukarara early in March. After that he Was sent home and he came back to Rlccarton in the middle of last week. ■ He had only one gallop before he raced last Saturday, when he was in the picture all the way In the Novice Stakes. With average luck these two will earn more money very soon.
