FREEZING WORKS CRITICISED

Charge Of Canvassing

Southland

Glut Of Fat Stock Aggravated WAIMATE. May 5. A letter in “The Timaru Herald." in which a correspondent stated that while surplus fat stock was blocking South Canterbury Freezing works, farmers in Southland were being canvassed for lambs for the works, received support at the annual meeting of the Waimate branch of the Farmers’ Union on Friday night. Mr A. H. Turner, who had recently visited Southland, guaranteed the correctness of the statement. It was decided to have the matter investigated. Reference to the letter in "The Timaru Herald” was made by Mr C. G. Verity, who said it was not very satisfactory when during the meat crisis, Southland farmers were being canvassed for lambs.

Mr Turner: I can guarantee that Mr Verity is correct.

The chairman (Mr J. Dempsey): I would just like to know if Mr Turner could say if the Southland lambs were being supplied by regular clients of the Pareora Works? Mr Turner: They weren’t. The chairman: “I had an interview with the works manager and he said they were receiving lambs from regular Southland clients, and for that reason, the lambs could not be refused” The capacity of the works had been fully extended, and they were doing their best to meet the position. “As one who lives alongside the railway line. I don’t think half a dozen truck loads of lambs went from Southland to Pareora.” Mr Dempsey added.

Mr Verity: Wouldn’t they pass in the night? (Laughter). The chairman: That might be so.

Mr Verity: The fact that the works have been killing to capacity does not excuse them from accepting Southland lambs. Mr J. C. Hay: I think the matter should be investigated.

Mr Verity moved a motion to chat effect, and it was carried.
