THE HARBOUR DREDGE Sir,—The following lines by War- | burton appear appropriate with refer- . ence to the Harbour Board’s explan- i ation in your issue of this morning: | Hear the dredge. The howling dredge: Whose horrid ululation sets our teeth I on edge: Morning, midnight, noon. It plays its demon tune. And scares us till our hearts go beating like a sledge. At the shrieking and the moaning, At the grunting and the groaning, At the squealing and the howling, At the grumbling and the growling, Of the dredge. Would the members of the Board be ' interested to learn that the horrid! ululation was to be heard three and a 1 half miles inland at an early hour . yesterday morning?—l am, etc.. RURAL. | Timaru, May 1. ENLISTMENT BADGE Sir, —As one who thinks it time some i badge was given to show a young man j has enlisted I write to you these , lines. My son. 19 years old, arrived ■ among the earliest at the Timaru Recruiting Office on the day it opened. | and although he has a permanent > injury to a limb, tried twice that day i to get put through for the First I Echelon. He wanted to help keep the | war away from New Zealand. The family doctor assures me he could never pass. He was specially commended for his keenness, but neighbours pick on me asking why my son is not in camp. As a mother of a brave lad I resent it.—l am. etc., WANTED. A BAD3E. Temuka, April 30. CORRESPONDENTS ANSWERED PATRIOT: Your criticism is not just. Committee members are doing their share —and more. Editor “Timaru Herald.” INFLUENZA: As you will have noticed, | there was an explanation of the shortage, i which no longer exists. Editor “Timaru | Herald.”
