ARSON CHARGE
GROCER FOR SENTENCE
By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. February 7.
Admitting a charge of committing arson by setting fire to a building in Wallace Street, Ernest Joseph Shrimpton, aged 63, a grocer, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
A grocery store managed by Shrimpton was damaged by fire on January 4. A statement taken by the police was put in, in which the accused said he was employed at £5/12 6 a week as manager, and intended to purchase the business, but he had been unable to obtain the necessary £lOO deposit and became worried. He had a few drinks that day. His mind seemed to be a blank and he did not know what made him start the fire, except that he was worried and did not know what he was doing. To counsel, Detective Smeaton said as far as he knew Shrimpton had been a perfect gentleman. Nothing was known against him.
