FAIRLIE TENNIS AT MOUNT MESSING

Good Players Heavily Handicapped Standard Of Play Shows Improvement Excellent entries and a good stanl dard of tennis made the annual doubles tournament of the Opawa Tennis Club which was played on the Albury and Mount Nessing courts on Saturday a successful fixture. Altogether there were 77 entries for the three sections. The men’s doubles were played at Albury, the women’s at Mount Nessing and the mixed doubles were divided between the two courts. The weather was exceptionally warm and the absence of wind made conditions ideal for play. The early elimination of some of the better known players of the district indicated that their handicaps were too heavy to allow them to compete on favourable terms with some of the younger players whose tennis improves rapidly each year. Only in the women’s doubles did a heavily handicapped pair succeed in reaching the finals. This was Miss D. Raymond and Mrs C. Hay ter who won the event after a series of well-fought matches. A good deal of the work of organising the tournament fell to the secretary Mr R. Irving. The lateness of many players in arriving at the courts delayed the start of the tournament and the deciding matches of the mixed doubles had to be played yesterday. The results were: Men’s Doubles First round—A. Kidd and A. Mackay (rec 30) beat D. Muir and D. Brown (scr) 6-3; A. Irving and S. Irving (scr) beat P. Kidd jr. and R. Irving jr (rec. 15) 6-3; S.
