WAIMATE TENNIS FINALS

Waimate Team Wins B Grade Hook Takes C Grade Cup Finals in the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-Associations competitions were played at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, Waimate defeating St. Paul’s for the B grade cup. The games were fairly evenly contested, and the standard of play was high. Waimate won by 10 sets to six, and Hook by nine sets to seven. At the conclusion of play the Mayor •Mr Dash) presented the cups at the invitation of the president of the SubAssociation (Mr E. E. Earnshaw). “It is many years since we planned how we could make Waimate a centre for the whole district,” said Mr Dash. He went on the say that there were now 12 efficient tennis clubs which centred in Waimate, and 180 players took part in the competitions for which the finals had been played that day. He congratulated the teams on their win. Details of the play are as follows: Waimate v. St. Paul’s Men’s singles: W. Westphal beat F. Boys 7-3, R. Nolan beat D. Taylor 7-2, O. Veitch lost to W. Deans lost to Miss N. Laurenson 3-6. Men’s doubles: Westphal and Veitch lost to Boys and Taylor 6-7, Nolan and Wilce lost to McNeill and Wright 1-7.
