CREW FEARED LOST
Sinking Of British Tanker United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 19. It is feared that all of the crew of 46 of the British tanker Inverdarglc (9456 tons) were lost when the vessel sank in flames off the south-west coast of England on Tuesday. Fourteen of the crew were British and the remainder were West Indians. A watcher on the shore said he saw a shape near the ship that looked like a submarine. The owners say that the victims included nine engineers, four officers and a wireless operator. Most of the men were from Scotland and the North of England, the majority of the remainder being West Indians. Torpedoed Without Warning A message from Stockholm states that the Pajala was torpedoed without warning. The crew of 35 were saved and landed at a Scottish port. Norway has asked Germany to investigate whether submarines were responsible for sinking three foreign ships, including the British vessel Thomas Walton, off the Norwegian coast. Germany, replying. denied that submarines were inside territorial waters. The Government has drafted emergency powers of State Control of merchant shipping. According to a Copenhagen message Russian ’planes stopped the Kastor in the Baltic. She took a new course, struck a rock and sank. The crew were saved. It is reported from Oslo that the Nautic sent an S O S message by wireless. A later message stated that the crew had taken to the boats west of Norway, North Shetlands.
