UNREGISTERED APIARY
BEEKEEPER CONVICTED An apiarist, J. R. P. Maddoc (Mr S. Raymond) was convicted and fined a total of £3/10/- with costs and expenses amounting to £3/11/6 on four charges relating to breaches of the beekeeping regulations which were preferred against him at the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr H. Morgan S.M. was on the Bench. Defendant was fined £2, with costs 10/-, on a charge of having removed bees from Staveley to Sutherlands without the written consent of an inspector. In this case the bees had become infected with foul brood disease before their removal. He was also fined 10/-, with costs 10/-, and ordered to pay witness’s expenses £l/11/6 on a charge of having kept an unregistered apiary at Staveley. Fines of 10/- each, with costs 10/-, were also imposed in connection with the unauthorised removal of bees from Pleasant Point to Staveley, and from Sutherlands to Rosewill. If he had seen them he would have ordered them to be destroyed. Traffic Breaches Inspector W. I. Tait, of the Traffic Department, prosecuted Michael McAuliffe, who appeared voluntarily, on a charge that he had driven a motor car in King Street, Temuka, at more than 30 miles an hour. Inspector Tait said that defendant had crossed two intersections at 40 miles an hour and then increased his speed to 50 miles an hour. Defendant explained that his taxi had been engaged by a soldier who had overstayed his leave, and who wished' to return to Burnham Camp before 11 o’clock. A fine of £2 and costs 3/- was imposed. Percy Thomas Harris was convicted and fined 10/- and costs for driving a van without carrying a warrant of fitness. Patrick James Houlihan was fined 7/6 and costs for cycling without a light.
