FAIRLIE NEED FOR GOOD MUSIIC

Orchestra For Town Discussed Patriotic Committee Meets The need for an orchestra in Fairlie to play at entertainments held to farewell soldiers was discussed at a meeting of the Fairlie Patriotic Committee on Wednesday night. Mr C. J. Talbot presided. The discussion arose after the dance committee had presented a financial statement dealing with the farewell function on Boxing night. Mr Talbot said that hiring orchestras from Timaru each time would prove expensive. There was the nucleus of a good orchestra in Fairlie. said Mr A. H. Carlton. It was recognised that it would be expensive to engage outside orchestras for each dance. He suggested that if the men who usually play at dances in Fairlie were approached they could probably bring m further players and form a first class orchestra in Fairlie. “There is a strong feeling, particularly amongst the young people, that a dance will not succeed unless an outside orchestra is engaged,” said Mr Talbot. “I think there should be a different attitude to these farewells. There have been complaints about the small gatherings which have farewelled soldiers in other centres, and we do not want them directed at Fairlie. Nevertheless we do not want to put on elaborate functions simply to draw the crowd. The nature of the function should guarantee good attendances. We do not want the people to come along purely with the idea of having a good time, but to give the men a good send off.” he added. It was decided that the chairman and secretary should interview the Fairlie musicians regardings the possibilities of forming a first class orchestra. Thanks were expressed to the subcommittee which made the arrangements for the dance. BOWLING The following will represent Fairlie against Kia Toa on the Fairlie green to-morrow:—C. D. Boulter (s), H.
