GERALDINE MANSE BRIDGE
Official Opening Ceremony Next Week Arrangements have been completed by the Geraldine County Council for the opening of the new Manse traffic bridge at Temuka on Saturday, January 27. The ceremony will be performed by Mr C. J. Talbot, Counties’ representative on the Main Highway Board, and the chairman of the Geraldine County Council (Mr K Mackenzie) and the Mayor of Temuka (Mr A. W. Buzan) will take part. The bridge, which replaces the old narrow wooden foot bridge, will give settlers better and shorter access to the Temuka borough and will be of much benefit to farmers taking stock to the sales. GIFTS TO RED CROSS The following additional gifts to the Geraldine Red Cross Centre are acknowledged by the treasurer (Mr A. N. Blakiston):—Mrs C. M. H. Stopford £2/2/- (soldiers’ comforts), Mrs A. Raukapuka, who have been on a visit to Akaroa, have returned home. More than 40 guests attended a garden party held at the home of Mr and Mrs R. H. Orbell, Macdonald Street, Geraldine, on Wednesday. The visitors were warm in their praise of the magnificent hydrangea blooms grown in the garden by Mr Orbell. Mr J. W. H. Patrick who has been visiting his parents. Mr and Mrs S. Patrick, Talbot Street, has returned to Wellington. ‘ Mrs H. J. Bowkett, Geraldine, tfho has been spending a holiday iin ' Timaru, has returned home. Miss Jane Orford, the Downs, Geraldine, has left for the north to attend the Girl Guides’ camp at Tauherenikau. Miss T. Patrick, who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to Geraldine. "BLUEBEARD’S EIGHTH WIFE" Set against the sophisticated background of Europe’s most famous pleasure spots, "Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife” tells the story of a resourceful maiden who tames a man who turns in his wives as casually as his sport roadsters. She meets him on the Riviera, snubs him in Prague, loses him in Vienna, makes him jealous in Paris and finally puts him in a straitjacket—in a lunatic asylum. Claudette Colbert and Gary Cooper are starred in the picture, which will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow night at 8.15. The supports include the opening of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition. A farewell and presentation will be tendered to Mr and Mrs A. Easterbrook in the Pleasant Valley Hall tomorrow. Mr E. Cholerton, Optical Specialist, proprietor of "Procter’s,” will be visiting G’taldine personally on Wednesday, January 24, when he may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
