Claims For Dividends Attitude of Trotting Club Two claims for dividends for which the totalisator tickets had been destroyed provoked a short but lively discussion at a meeting of the committee of the Timaru Trotting Club yesterday, when a recommendation to the totalisator committee that no such claims be recognised without the production of a ticket was carried by five votes to three. A letter from one claimant stated that he had torn up a 10/- ticket on Colonel Axworthy in the Farewell Handicap and the other advised that he had destroyed his ticket on Red Pigeon. Mr A. B. Annand moved that the applications be referred to the totalisator committee. “This is a most serious thing,” said Mr W. A. Piddington. “What was to stop a man in the totalisator, knowing that a dividend had not been collected,” making a claim for the money,” he asked. “I think we should take a stand and refuse all claims.” Mr Annand said that the totalisator committee would be able to define a policy for the three clubs.
The secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) said that in the past the policy adopted in Timaru was to pay all dividends even though the ticket was not produced, provided that the claimant was outstanding and there were no other claimants. He quoted an instance where the Hunt Club had paid out a dividend 12 months after the meeting. After further discussion a recommendation to the totalisator committee that no claims for dividend without production of the ticket be entertained, was carried.
