Mr W. P. J. Koper, manager of the Nederland Royal Mail Line. Batavia, is visiting the Dominion.

Lieutenant-Colonel L. H. Jardine has been appointed to the command of the Taranaki Territorial Regiment, in succession to Major L. M. Fairbrother, who has been transferred to a teaching appointment in the South Island.

Members of the Canterbury Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Association farewelled Mr P. H. Harris who has retired from the management of the South British Insurance Company. The vice-chairman (Mr E. H. Box) presented Mr Harris with a set of bowls.

Sympathy with Mr W. S. Grant, Temuka, in the death of his wife, was expressed last night by the Council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society of which Mt Grant was formerly a member for a number of years.

Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, has advised the National Centennial Flower Show executive, Wellington, that he will open the National Horticultural Week and the National Centennial Flower Show at the exhibition on January 30.

Reference to the death of Mr H. F. Morton was mhde by the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, at the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night. Mr Tweedy mentioned that Mr Morton had been a resident for a long period and had taken a keen interest in many matters appertaining to the welfare of the town. Mr Morton had once been a member of the Council when he had given very good service indeed. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silehce.
