WATER SUPPLY

Restrictions Lifted

Care Still Necessary After a short discussion the Timaru Borough Council decided last night that I the present restriction on the use of I garden hoses be removed, but that the | public be asked to use the water in I moderation. ! The matter was brought up by Cr. . W. FI. Hall, chairman of the Works | Committee, who said that an inspection ■ of the reservoir showed that the level i of the water had risen to within two i feet three inches of the top. Cr. Hall said he thought that it would be safe ' to remove the restriction on the use of garden hoses, provided people did not I waste the water. The Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy): Unfortunately some people did not observe the restrictions. Cr. M. H. Richards: Yes, and some of them left the hoses running all night in spite of the restrictions. The Mayor: Next time we apply a restriction we should see that it is crmplied with by sending round the inspectors to take the names of I offenders with a view to prosecution. | Cr. Hall: For the sake of the people j who complied with the Council’s rei quest I woud like to see the restriction ! removed. I feel it would be safe to |do so. and. if necessary, we can re- ' impose it. A week ago the level of the water in the reservoir was down four feet six inches. During the day time the draw off occurred at the rate of 2,500,000 gallons. Cr. P. B. Foote: We ought to make it very clear that the water is not to be wasted. I thoroughly agree that when a restriction is imposed the inspectors should be sent round to see that it is obeyed. Cr. Hall assured the Council that there would be plenty of water available. provided it was not wasted, and it was decided to remove the restriction.
