ORARI
At the December meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute, (Mrs Macdonald (president), read a telegram conveying Christmas greetings to members from a former president Mrs Hughes. The golden thread “Pioneer Women of N.Z.,” was taken by Mrs Henderson who gave a short history of the settlement of Mr and Mrs Henderson with their family of four boys in Orari near the Orari river at the back ol the racecourse. At that time a leg of mutton could be bought for 6d and people drove to church with horse and dry to Geraldine. Mrs Henderson also showed a “treasured possession,’’ a sampler made by her grandmother 86 years ago. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Butler, of Timaru, for his very interesting talk on a recent visit to America. Suva, Honolulu, Vancouver. Oregon and California were some of the places visited and well described by Mr Butler who gave many interesting details. After tea and the social half hour, Mrs Watson demonstrated floral work showing a posy and sprays and a wreath and bouquet in the making. Mrs Macdonald, president, and Mrs Harvey, secretary, were each presented with a spray. A picnic was arranged to be held at Waihi Gorge on January 18, members to meet at 9.30 a.m. at the Orari P. 0., each member to bring a basket and milk. Several members took Red Cross work to do for the Geraldine Centre and flags to help the funds were on sale. Competitions resulted:— Flowers, single bloom, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Macdonald 3; truss, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Macdonald 2; bowl of flowers, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Watson 2; largest lettuce, Miss Unwin 1. Mrs Smith 2; Christmas present not to cost more than 1/-, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Bennett 2, Mrs Henderson 3.
