The idea of a Scottish settlement in New Zealand was fir t set on foot by a Scottish member of Parliament, who was appalled bx the poverty and distress prevalent tn Britain. The first of these settlers came out in 1848 under Captain Cargill and the Rev. Thomas Burns, a nephew of the poet. They settled in Dunedin, which is the ancient name spr Edinburgh.
