Sixty Years Ago

“ The Timaru Herald,” December 16, 1879 Government Economy Statements have appeared in the newspapers from time to time, that the Government intended to create Parliamentary Under-Secretaries to assist in the i lana gement on the business of the Legislature, and when, a few days ago, the Premier gave notice of a Bill to amend the Civil List Act. an impression got abroad that this was the object of it. The Bill proves, however. to be a measure for increasing the number of Ministers without additional expense to the country. It provides that there shall be eight Ministers instead of seven, but that the salary of the Premier shall be diminished by two hundred pounds a year, and that of the other Ministers by one hundred and fifty pounds, thus providing a salary for the additional Minister out of the savings effected. The Government have certainly adopted a very practical method of showing the sincerity of their desire for economy, and we hope that their unselfishness will be duly appreciated by the country. Labour Market Auckland.—Railway contractors advertise for men and can’t get them. Farmers in the north are almost at a standstill for want of labour. The unemployed are interviewing the Mayor to get the Government to let a railway reclamation contract by day labour. Excursion and Picnic The Independent Order of Rechabites’ Temperance Benefit Society advertise that the third anniversary of the Good Samaritan Tent. Timaru. will be celebrated on Boxing Day by an excursion to Pareora Bush, the use of which has been granted by Mr Wright. Two substantial meals and abundance of tea will lie provided during the day. and in order that the Committee may be able to complete all necessary arrangements for making the picnic pleasant and successful, we are requested to call attention to the fact that tickets of which only a limited number will be issued, should be secured before eight o’clock on Saturday evening. A Wonderful Cure To Dr Grant and Professor Wallenburg.—Gentlemen. allow me to thank you for the wonderful cure you have performed in my case. I have been deaf for 20 years in the left ear. and 12 years in the right. I placed myself under your care on the 6th October. Tills day, I am able to hear the ticking of a watch at a considerable distance from my ears, and am quite well. I hope all sufferers may be as fortunate as I have been. Thanking vo l again, I am, William Bracks, Dunedin.
