USELESS EMBARGO “Amongst those who know anything about the subject there is no argument on the necessity for an embargo on livestock to keep foot-and-mouth disease out of New Zealand,” said Mr J. W. McLean, B.V.Sc., M.Ag.Sc., of Lincoln College, addressing the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society. “The argument is purely between those who know and those who do not know. Foot-and-mouth disease can come into this country just as readily in infected straw or packing material as in animals. The embargo, therefore, has no effect whatever on the likelihood of foot-and-mouth disease appearing in the Dominion. There is just cs much chance of our getting the disease while the embargo is enforced as there would be ff it were lifted.”
