Not much money will be lost by early backers if High Caste is beaten in the A.J.C. Derby. Bookmakers had pretty consistently refused to bet on the race. After the Hobartville Stakes one Sydney paper expressed the opinion that: “If High Caste’s huge physical proportions do not prevent his running a mile and a half, the A.J.C. might as well write out a cheque for the first prize, £3BOO, wrap up the classic riband and present them to Mr H. E. Tancred without even running the A.J.C. Derby.” His jockey, E. Bartie, described his performance as the best Derby trial he had known, and A. Pap-, worth, trainer of Reading, described High Caste as one of the best three-year-olds he had ever seen. In spite of that High Caste finished nearly last in the Chelmsford Stakes. On July 24 Gordon Richards rode three winners at Worcester and raised his total fur the season to 101. With nearly four months to go he looked likely to top the second century again, but the war has made the outlook uncertain. During his career Richards has topped the winning jockeys’ list 12 times, the last eight years in succession, and has ridden 2532 winners from over 13,000 mounts. Fred Archer, who rode from 1870 till 1885 topped the list for 13 consecutive seasons and won 2748 races, which leaves Richards with only 218 more winners to ride before he equals that record. George Fordham, who headed the list 14 times, rode 2578 winners, which is still 46 ahead of Richards. On five occasions 1 Richards has ridden more than 200 winners in a season, and he broke Archer’s 1885 record of 146 winners by piloting 259 in 1933.
