A Budget of News And Views FIXTURES Racing Sept. 16—Foxton R.C. Sept. 16—Ashburton R.C. Sept 16-18—Avondale J.C. Sept. 21. 23.—Geraldine R.C. Sept. 23—Marton J.C. Sept. 30—Otaki Maori R.C. Sept. 30. Oct. 7—New Brighton T.C. Oct. 21, 23—Greymouth T.C. Oct. 21. 23 or 21, 25-Auckland T.C. Oct. 23—Oamaru T.C. Oct. 28—Wellington T.C. Oct. 28—Invercargill T.C. Nov. 7. 9. 10 —N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. The first race at Ashburton on Saturday is programmed for 12.15. Beaulivre has now won £2795 in stakes, as the result of eight wins, four seconds and a third in 13 starts. Beau Vite is favourite for the A.J.C. Derby; Royal Chief is joint favourite (with Cooranga) for the Metropolitan; and Defaulter and Beau Vite head the Melbourne Cup quotations. The principal meetings in Australia this week are Rosehill (Sydney) and Moonee Valley (Melbourne). The Rosehill fixture will be the last of any importance in New South Wales prior to the opening of the Randwick carnival on September 30. With the A.J.C. meeting less than three weeks ahead, the news concerning Defaulter is disquieting. Any break in his preparation would place him at a disadvantage, and a filled leg might have even more serious results. Defaulter is a big-topped horse, and it is obvious that his trainer has an anxious time ahead. There are two class races on the Rosehill card on Saturday—the Hill Stakes (w.f.a with penalties), and the Rosehill Guineas. Royal Chief will probably be favourite for the Stakes, and High Caste, despite his poor showing in the Chelmsford Stakes, should make amends in the Guineas. Nothing has been working better at Hastings at present that Kathbclla, who is to commence her four-year-old racing at the Avondale meeting next week. Kathbclla reached the top of her form at Avondale in the autumn and was a decisive winner on the second day. Golden Memory, favourite for the hurdle race at Wanganui on Saturday, appears to have been unlucky. After jumping the fence in front of the stands his saddle broke, yet A. E. Lord rode him practically bareback the rest of the way and landed him a close fourth. With ordinary assistance he would probably have won easily. I Beaulivre has won his first two races . for Mr E. C. Harnett, of Wellington, who paid 2900 guineas for him at the dispersal sale of the late Mr W. Higgins’ horses in July, and his return so far has been £4BO. Last year he was the leading juvenile with stakewinnings of £2315. As a coincidence, Saturday (Guineas Day at Wanganui) was Mr Harnett’s birthday. Mr J. Fletcher’s 25gns. horse Royal Star 11., has shown no signs of soreness whatever since being placed in to work at Hastings after the dispersal .sale of the late W. Higgins’ horses. Winner of the Wairarapa Cup at his last start, Royal Star 11. has shown himself to be up to good handicap form and the Englishman may be one of the cheapest horses purchased for a long time. Beaupartir was a neat three-year-old, but he has developed all round since he raced last Easter and is now a commanding horse. His mission is the New Zealand Cup, but he will be ; seen in action before that and it would ; not surprise to see him strike form at Trentham as he usually comes to hand quickly. His connections have no doubts that he will prove up to two miles. Consistency has been a feature of the latest form of the five-year-old Hunting Lore and he registered his fourth successive second when he was runner-up to Lord Mouton at Wanganui on Saturday. Hunting Lore has been mixing his racing in the past couple of months and his effort indicated that he has benefited by his racing over hurdles, which yielded a second to Aussie Ra at Marton and another to Toper at Awapuni. Malik Kafur, who ran away from his opponents in the Trial Handicap at Wanganui, had failed when sent out favourite on the previous day. He is a three-year-old Australian-bred chestnut gelding by the Foxlaw sire Foxearth. He is owned by Mr H. Bayly, of Marton, who races The Buzzer and who bought him as a yearling at the Sydney sales. He was given only one race late last season, and his two outings at Wanganui were his first appearances this season. Beaulivre completely outclassed his four opponents in the Wanganui Guineas, for which he was at a very short price. He is the second Guineas winner credited to his dam, Passbook, | Deficit having won three years ago. ji Submission’s failure on the first day i had indicated she had only a moderate I chance, but the connections of Gayest i Son looked forward to the race very i confidently. Beaulivre may not be a 1 Derby colt, but up to a mile he i promises to be invincible during the ( spring, and he was going away at the ’ end of a mile at Wanganui. 1
