Tonic Hair Treatments
Lotion for Daily Use Use a soft fine brush if the hair is actually falling out or breaking off, and apply friction with the finger tips only. When new hair is growing and the condition generally has improved, a brush with firm bristles set in a rubber pad will stimulate the growth. An excellent lotion for daily use to keep the hair healthy is made by mixing l£oz. of acetic acid, loz. spirits of rosemary, loz. glycerine, 4oz. rosewater and 2oz. eau-de-Cologne. A simple tonic very effective for dry scalp and splitting hair, is made with equal quantities of olive oil and spirits of rosemary, with a few drops of oil of nutmeg. Rub a little into the roots of the hair each night. In cases of falling hair and stubborn dandruff, great improvement can be effected by a special lotion dabbed on the scalp with a small sponge every night: loz. liquor ammonia, 3oz. spirit of rosemary, loz. almond oil, loz. tincture of cantharides, 2oz. lavender water.
The old-fashioned mixture of an ounce of castor oil and a drachm of tincture of cantharides often succeeds as a daily tonic to thinning hair when the most elaborate and expensive treatments have failed.
If the hair is dry and brittle, mix equal quantities of olive oil and brilliantine, and use in a spray to give a healthy gloss. If used again at night before brushing, the oiliness is helpful in making dust cling to the bristles, and the brush conveys the oil to the scalp to keep it moist and loose.
