NOTICE TO QUIT
MAORIS AT ORAKEI By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. June 20. A further stage in the long-standing dispute over, the ownership of what is known as the “church site” on the hills above Okahu Bay. Orakei, has been reached. The Maori occupants of four properties on the area have received formal notice that they are living on Crown land w-hich they are required to vacate within the next week or so. Although there are only a few properties they represent the home of about 30 Maori people. Protracted disputes over the ownership, which came to a head w-hen the Orakei State housing scheme was advanced. resulted in a decision that the area was Crown land and the formal notice to quit is the outcome. This view has been vigorously opposed by the native residents.
