Increased Scale of All owances
Announcement by Prime Minister By Telegraph Press Association WELLINGTON. June 20. The Prime Minister said this afternoon that for some time past the Government had had under consideration the effect of the present cost of living on the conditions of ratings in the New Zealand naval forces in relation to their pay and allowances The formulation of the proposals occupied much time and to-day was the first occasion on which the Cabinet had met since they were completed. Mr Savage said the Cabinet had decided to substitute the undermentioned rates of marriage and children's allowances for those now in force, the new- rates to take effect as from June 1. 1939. The present marriage allowance of 2- a day (equal to 14 - a week) is to be converted to a weekly rate of £l. and the children s allowance is to be converted from 6d a day (equal to 3 6 a weeki to 5/- a week. The maximum amount for marriage and children's allowances is to be fixed at £2 5 - a week compared with £1 15— at present. The new rates will apply to Imperial and New Zealand ratings. At the same time the Government has had under consideration matters relating to wages and this investigation is being continued. The Minister of Defence (the Hon P. The Admiralty declines to comment on the pay demand by New Zealand naval ratings. “New Zealand has a separate service with its own regulations. The Admiralty could not, in these circumstances, give any opinion,” it was stated.
