THE TULIP TREES

The tulip .tree is one of the noblest trees of the eastern United States where specimens reaching a height of 200 feet with a trunk diameter of 8 to 10 feet are occasionally met with. Although too big for the average town garden it is well adapted for specimen planting as for an avenue. The tulip-

like flowers which are borne in great abundance after the tree has reached about ten feet in height, during November and December, are rather disappointing colour being greenish yellow with orange markings. The tree is prized in gardens because of its handsome clean foliage of unusual shape which asurnes a bril’-nt yellow colour in autumn. There is a very desirable fc n with the leaves widely marked with yellow. The tulip tree will grow in any ordinary soil but does not flourish in hot, dry, hungry land.
