MAKIKIHI MILITARY BALL

Successful Function Appeal for Recruits On Wednesday night the first ball of a military nature ever held at Makikihi was organised by the combined St. Andrews and Makikihi Territorials and proved an unqualified success. As a result of the function eight men have expressed their willingness to join the Territorial movement. All Territorials attended in military dress. The ballroom for the occasion was decorated with coloured streamers. Many visitors from Oamaru, Waimate. Timaru, St. Andrews and surrounding districts were the guests, and they spent a most enjoyable time. The grand march in which 50 couples took part, was led by the guests of honour, Major and Mrs G. R. Lee. A feature of the evening's entertainment was the special demonstrations of the Lambeth Walk and Palais Glide. A waltzing competition, judged by Mrs Lee, was finally decided by a popular vote. The winners were Mrs Sinclair and Mr Walker. During the evening Major Lee congratulated the organising committee on the success of their efforts arid emphasised the necessity for building up New Zealand's defence.
