IMPORTANT DECISION By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 31. Steps are to be taken immediately to establish in Auckland a Cancer Statistical Research Department. This decision was made at a meeting of the executive of the Auckland Division of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. The Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis), ’ o presided, announced that the Empire Day appeal had realised £1387. The Mayor submitted the following budget for the yer? 1939-40: Salary of statistical research officer, £750, rising to £1000; travelling expenses, £150; wages of record clerk-typist, £200; office expenses, £100; contingencies, £lOO. Sir Ernest also recommended the appointment immediately of a statistical research officer, who must also be a medical man. The duties of the research officer envisaged, Sir Ernest continued, would provide invaluable information to members of the medical profession in New Zealand and facilitate submission to England of what might virtually be described as an audit of the entire treatment of cancer carried out in the Dominion. The recommendations of the Mayor were adopted. Sir Ernest said that next year the division would have to have £2OOO or more, because it was wanted. Dr. Smith Gray, representing the British Medical Association, said that the association would give every assistance possible to the furtherance of the work of investigation into cancer. Mr Douglas Robb said the establishment of the department would be of historic importance.
