VITAL STATISTICS

TIMARU The vital statistics for Timaru for May show that there was a considerable increase in the number of both births and deaths compared with those of May last year. The figures are as follow, those for May last year being given in parentheses:—Births: Males 16 (12), females 22 (10), total 38 (22); deaths: males 17 (13), females 11 (3), totals 28 (16). Nineteen marriage licenses were issued in both May, 1938 and 1939. Last month the Registrar, Mr W. Harte, officiated at three Registry Office marriages, and his services were required on one occasion in May, 1938. DUNEDIN A fairly large increase in the number of deaths and marriages compared with the same month of 1938 is shown in the vital statistics for May. Deaths increased from 82 to 122. There were 13 more marriages but birth showed a decline of from 130 to 115. The comparative figures are as follows:—Births 115 (130), deaths 122 (82), marriages 82 (69).
