ENDED IN FIRST ROUND
EASY VICTORY FOR JOE LOUIS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 18, 10.15 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, April 18. Joe Louis knocked out Jack Roper in the first round of a scheduled tenround title bout. The knock-out came after only two minutes 22 seconds. Roper was counted out while groggily attempting to regain his feet. A right to the jaw after a series of lefts to the jaw, ended a farcical fight, witnessed by a majority of the cinema actors, all of whom were violently pro-Roper. It was anticipated that 40,000 would see the heavy-weight boxing titleholder defend his title.
Roper’s ability was regarded as uncertain, except for his left hand blow, from which he has stretched out good fighters in the last 15 years. A crowd of .3500 paid 100,000 dollars, the best seats being priced at 11 dollars 50 cents, to see Roper, who is employed as an electrician at one of the film studios, land a single stinging blow to Louis’s face, after which the champion rushed him to the corner and knocked him out quickly.
