WEATHER SOUTH CANTERBURY FORECAST

FAIR AND MILD Special to “ The Timaru Herata." WELLINGTON, April 17. Winds —North-west to west winds predominating but turning at times to south-west. Weather —Occasional scattered light showers but the weather mostly fair; mild temperatures. Seas —Rather rough north of Kaikoura, slight to moderate elsewhere. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation Pressure is falling slowly over the Dominion under the influence of a series of shallow depressions advancing across the Tasman Sea. Over SouthEastern Australia pressure is rising. Forecast Winds—North to west and turning later in places, more especially in the western and southern districts, to south-west; strong at times about and south of Cook Strait, elsewhere moderate. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rather rough to rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits and on parts of the west coast of the South Island, otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea—Winds rather variable with north-west to south-west predominating, force light to fresh, seas slight to moderate. Weather—Cloudy to overcast in the western and southern portions of the South Island with rain at times; elsewhere mainly fair to fine but scattered light rains becoming more widespread in districts with a westerly aspect and the South Island; temperatures moderate.

DULL CONDITIONS Yesterday was dull and threatening with a strong south-westerly wind in the afternoon. There was an interval of brilliant sunshine about five o’clock. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were; — Barometer —29.81. ' lax. temp.—64.B. Min. temp, on grass—4B.4. Wind—S.W. Rainfall—Nil. Rainfall to date this year—3.2lins. Rainfall to date last year—ll.77ins. Sunshine —Nil. Sunshine to date this year—665.5hr5. Sunshine to date last year—4B3.4hrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: Yesterday was cloudy and very warm with a fresh north-west breeze in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 76.3 degrees. The barometer recorded 29.83 inches last evening and was falling. Geraldine: Dull and sultry till late in the afternoon when cooler conditions prevailed. Temuka: Yesterday was dull and overcast and a south-west wind sprang up early in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 68 degrees and the minimum 48. The glass was steady last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. Monday): Barometer, 29.4; thermometer, maximum 75.2; minimum 54.0; bright sunshine, nil; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 71. Yesterday was overcast and mild. Dunedin: Yesterday was overcast and rain threatened in the morning. There was no wind. Temperatures were warm, the maximum being 71 degrees. The barometer was steady at 30 inches till late afternoon, when there was a slight tendency to fall.
