SHIPPING PORT OF TIMARU

Otaio To Sail To-day

The Otaio, which continued her homeward loading yesterday, is expected to clear the Port of Timaru to-day for Gisborne. The only other activity yesterday was the working of the Gale which sailed last night for Lyttelton after loading for Wellington and Wanganui. The Waipiata is due to-day from Oamaru to load for Wellington and Auckland via Lyttelton, and the Karu is due to load for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth via Lyttelton.

COASTAL VESSELS Listed Movements The new Union Company vessel, Waipori will make her first visit to Timaru on Thursday when she is due from Dunedin. She will sail for Lyttelton on the same day. Expected from Bunedin and Oamaru on Wednesday the Wainui will load for Wellington, Napier and Gisborne, sailing later for Lyttelton to continue loading. The Narbada The Union Company’s chartered steamer, Narbada, en route from Calcutta, Penang, and Singapore, was to have left Samarang on Thursday for Probolingo to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on May 3. San Francisco Shipping Figures compiled by the Maritime Exchange show that a total of 5240 ships arrived at San Francisco during the year 1938, their aggregate net tonnage being 17,248,641; this is an increase of 360 in the number of ships and of 147,799 in tonnage over the year 1937. Departures last year totalled 5121 ships with an aggregate net tonnage of 17,539,629, or an increase of 244 in the number of ships and 1,730,427 as compared with the year 1937.

Arivals during ths month of December totalled 474 ships with an aggregate net tonnage of 1,594,069, which is an increase in the number of ships of 80 and 254,230 in tonnage over December, 1937. Departures during that month totalled 460 ships with an aggregate net tonnage of 1,662,136, an increase of 97 in the number of ships and 381,368 in tonnage as compared with the same month 1: 1937.

Norwegian Working Hours A Bill sponsored by the Norwegian Government on the subject of working hours at sea has been passed by the Odelsting, but with the important reservations that two of the clauses, covering the number of watches in port and the total hours worked weekly in the coastal service, should be referred back to the framing committee in an attempt to reach a compromise. By a majority vote the tonnage limit above which the three-watch system for deck ratings must be applied was fixed at 2500 tons, against the 2000 tons originally proposed by the Government. With regard to working hours in port, the committee considered that if the stay in port was less than 24 hours sea watches should be maintained. The Government finally agreed to refer to the committee in order to ascertain what the cost of the change would be.

Regarding coasting traffic, a minority supported the Government proposal for a 56-hour week, but a majority of the committee were in favour of a 70-hour week, compared with the present 80hour week. A compromise was suggested based on one of 63 hours, and it was decidec’ to consult the committee on the question of cost. Remuer- at Suva The Remuera arrived at Suva on Saturday morning and the agents expect to despatch her to-morrow for Wellington, where she is due on Monday morning.

SMART SAILING SHIP MEETS AWATEA IN TASMAN A rare sight was witnessed by the passengers in the Awatea on a recent trip from Wellington to Sydney. About 4 o’clock in the afternoon of March 2, when the Awatea was about “00 miles from Sydney, a large sailing ship was sighted right ahead. Running free under full sail in a light breeze, the stranger, a big four-

masted barque, passed about two miles off. She proved to be the Padua, owned by F. Laiesz, of Hamburg, and was bound from Valparaiso, in ballast, to South Australia. She arrived at Port Lincoln on March 8, only six days after being sighted by the Awatea and 53 days out from Valparaiso. The Padua is loading wheat at Port Lincoln for the United Kingdom or Continent.

Although since her launching in 1926 this vessel has been employed almost entirely in the nitrate trade from Chile, she took a cargo of Australian wheat to a Bristol Channel port in 1935. She and her sister ship Pariwali, the last of the Laeisz Line of “P ’ sailing ships in the nitrate trade, have been making remarkably fast and regular passages between Germany and the West Coast of South America. The Padua’s last passage out, for instance, was 68 days from Bremen to Corral; and the Priwall’s 74 days to Valparaiso from Hamburg

A correspondent in :. shippng journal mentions that on this passage the Priwall, going through the Strait of Le Maire, covered the distance between 50deg. si (Atlantic) and 50deg. S. (Pacific) in five days 14 hours, which s believed to be a record. It must be remembered, however, that she carries a complement of 72, including 55 cadets. The Padua is a steel vessel of 3,084 tons, built by the J. C. Tecklenborg A.G. at Wesermunde. Since 1935 her passages home from Chile have been remarkably consistent —BB days, 81 days, 88 days, 89 days, and 91 days.

Besides the Padua and the Priwall, other German sailing ships carrying cadets are the Norddeutscher Lloyd’s four-masted barque Kommodore Johnsen, and the German Trainng Ship Association’s full-rigged Schulschiff Deutschland, which receives a State subsidy. There are also the three naval square-riggers Gorch Fock, Horst Wessel, and Albert Leo Schageter, while at the end of last year Herr Essberger, the Hamburg tanker owner, bought the wooden four-masted schooner Bandi, launched in 1919, for use as a trainng ship for future officers of his company. It can thus be seen that the Germans still attach considerable importance to sail-training for both naval and merchant officers.
