WAIMATE BADMINTON CLUB

Official Opening Election of Officers The official opening of the Waimate Badminton Club took place on Saturday night at the Drill Hall, Dr. T. W. Wylie welcomed visitors and friends and after wishing members a successful season, declared the courts open for 1939.

The annual report stated that last season was most successful. The membership was 51, and it could be said that all members were becoming much more proficient, the general standard of play being higher than in previous years. Four matches were played, two against Oamaru and two against Timaru, Waimate winning two. The competitions were well supported and resulted in some very good finishes, the men's championship final between Richardson and Liddell being a particularly good game, Liddell winning for the second year. The women’s championship was won by Mrs Boyes. The finances were in a good position. The club expressed thanks to the following: The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs G. Dash), Mr P. V. Stevens, fare caretaker, and to the social committee.

The following officers were elected: Patron, the Mayor (Mr G. Dash); president, Dr. T. W. Wylie; vice-presi-dent, Mr B. B. Lane; club captain, Mr Guy D. Liddell; committee, Mr D. Jones and M!r L. Malthus; ladies’ entertainment committee, Mrs A. Partridge, Misses M. Chalmers and M. Bryce; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. J. Morrison; auditor, Mr Geo. Aitken.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY MISS NONA NEWALL HONOURED An enjoyable birthday party was held in the Silver Band Hall on Saturday evening on the occasion of the coming of age of Miss Nona Newall, daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Newall. Mrs Newall. who received the guests, wore a navy satin frock, while Miss Newall was frocked in powder blue ninon over silk. The evening passed in cards and dancing. The winners at cards were Mrs Calder and Mr W. Ross, the consolation prizes going to Mrs A. Ross and Mr Sandhurst. Music for dancing was supplied by a Waimate orchestra, and extras were played by Miss A. Patterson and Miss Eileen McDonald. Novelty dances were won by Miss Cooper and Mr R. Cochrane (lucky spot), Miss Nina Newall and Mr C. Hanham (bobby dance), Miss A. Johnston and Mr Eric Joliffe (Monte Carlo). Two songs sung by Miss Jessie Hooper were heartily applauded. Mr J. Jones, in a happy speech, proposed the health of Miss Newall, after which Mr Newall presented his daughter with a gold key. Mr Arthur Kirby replied on behalf of Miss Newall.

GLENAVY LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING Mr J. G. Hamilton presided over the annual meeting of the Glenavy Public Library Committee. It was decided to purge the shelves of a number of books and present them to the Old Men’s Home, Oamaru, and replace with more modem editions. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Smart for auditing the books, and to Mr E. A. Coumbe for his duties as secretary and librarian. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr J. G. Hamilton (re-elected); secretary and librarian, Mr A. E. Coumbe (re-elected); ocmmittee, Messrs N. Gibson, W. Dumbleton, J. A. Archer, E. Simpson and D. Ireland. DOG TRIALS WAITAKI COLLIE CLUB The concluding results of the Waitaki Collie Club’s annual trials were as follows: Class 111, Long Pull—R. Wilson’s Hope, 56 points, 1; N. McKenzie’s Scott, 49 points, 2; R. Wilson’s Gyp, 48 points 3; D. McKenzie’s Nell, 46 points, 4; J. Mcßae’s Whitney Dick, 454 points, 5. Class Illa—N. McKenzie’s Scott, 49 points, 1; D. McKenzie’s Nell, 46 points 2; C. Eden’s Spot, 45 points, 3; C. H. Smith’s Moss and R. Gibson’s Moss, 44 points (equal) 4. Specials—Club’s challenge cup, R. Wilson; Boy Roy Cup, R. Mrs J. G. Ruddenklau and Mrs A. A. Scott were hostesses at a party held at. Mrs Ruddenklau’s home, "The Valley,” on Saturday night. A feature of the evening was a moving picture, shown by Mr George Edmonds, of Christchurch, of his tour in England, Europe and America and some taken in Waimate about four years ago. Most

of the pictures were in colour and those of Central European countries were most picturesque and interesting. As well as pictures a number of the guests enjoyed dancing. PERSONAL Miss V. McMillan, of Dunedin, was a visitor to Waimate yesterday. Mrs E. Berry (Christchurch) and Mr E. Berry (:Wellington), who visited Glenavy to attend the School Jubilee, returned home yesterday.
