CONSULATE CLOSED

REPERCUSSION OF EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENTS By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, March 29. “I am sure that the community shares the regret I feel at having to take leave officially of you as consul for Czecho-slovakia in New Zealand,” stated a letter from the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, addressed to Mr R. M. Algie. “If I may so,” the Mayor added, “you have upheld your office with dignity and distinction and one cannot escape the conclusion that the circumstances responsible for the closing of the Consulate here are repugnant to the residents of a British democracy.

“To me, as no doubt to other Aucklanders, it is extraordinary that the repercussions of European developments sheuld be felt in this manner in far-away New Zealand. It forces one to ponder deeply on the causes and to sympathise wholeheartedly with the smaller nation victims of ruthless aggression,” the letter concluded.
