WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ORARI The president, Mrs Hughes welcomed 33 members at the March meeting of the Orari Institute. Mrs Unwin spoke about the Institute book, on the history of the district and asked for any interesting articles to be handed in. She also cordially irvited members to attend the garden party to be held at “Stratheona” Domestic School. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Harvey, for a gift of playing cards and also for her generous help in getting passengers for the bus from Geraldine to Timaru for the searchlight review. Mrs Unwin has beer nominated for reelection on the Executive Committee at the meeting to be held in Geraldine on April 26. Mrs Scott and Mrs Bowker were the delegates elected to attend this meeting. Mrs Prattley gave for the “Golden Thread.” a talk on a recent trip to Southland. After afternoon tea, a visitor from the Executive Committee, Mrs Chisnell, gave a very instructive talk on the working of the Women's Institute, leading up to the formation of the great body of “The Associated Country Women of the World.” She expressed the desirability of the need for friendship with women of other lands, and in such co-operation great forbearance with one another remembering that each had her own special point of view. Mrs Chisnell gave all much food for thought and was thanked for her help, by Mrs Macdonald. Opportunity was t; ken to make a small presentation to Mrs Hughes, the retiring president, and her daughter Miss Gwenith Hughes both of vhom are leaving the district. Mrs Unwin and Mrs Macdonald in making the presentation, thanked Mrs Hughe., for her great service and expressed the wish of the members in wishing both she and her daughter health and happiness in her new home. Mrs Hughes suitably replied on behalf of herself and her daughter. Annual Meeting No voting was required at the annual meeting the newly elected committee being Mrs Harvey (secretary), Mrs Dallard (treasurer), Mesdames Storey, Shutt. Williams, Watson, Prattley, Funnel!, J. A. Henderson and Miss H. Unwin. Competitions result :d for the day as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Brenton 2, Mr: F. Hughes 3. Best bowl, Mrs F. Hughes 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Bowker 3. Bed socks, Miss N. Gerard 1. W .ter bottle cover, Miss N. Gerard 1. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted, both proving that the Institute had had a busy and successful year. Mrs Macdonald was unanimtusly elected president, unopposed.
