PEEL FOREST
On March 16 at the Peel Forest Hall, a largely attended meeting was held to discuss the formation of a branch of the Women’s Institute. Mrs H. Locke, convener of the meeting acted as secretary. Mrs D. Morrison, who took the chair, introduced the South Canterbury organiser, Mrs Williams, who then presided over the meeting, giving a most interesting and helpful address on the origin, object and aims of the Women’s Institute and explaining how a Women’s Institute was managed. It was unanimously agreed to form a Peel Forest branch of the Women’s Institute, which will meet on the third Thursday of every month. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year—Mrs D. Morrison, president; Mrs E. S. Foden, secretary; Mrs H. Locke, treasurer; committee, Mesdames S. Upritchard, Reid, G. Wooding, L. Henry, J. Ashby, A. Allan, C. Kerr, A. Taylor, F. Cain, Timpson, H. Locke, D. Morrison and E. Foden. A very friendly gesture was shown oy the members of the Arundel Women’s Institute, in sending a letter of good wishes and also a donation tow’ards the funds of the newly-formed branch. It seemed to express in such practical way all that the Women's Institute stands for. Before the meeting was closed a programme was drawn up for the next meeting on April 20 and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Williams for her valuable assistance. Among those present at the meeting were —Mesdames Williams, Morrison, Reid, P. Scott, G. Wooding, J. Ashby, W. Ashby, J. Hewitt, C. Kerr, A. Taylor, A. Allan, E. Foden senr.. J. Binnie. H. Locke and E. S. Foden, Misses R. and J. Reid, M. Foden, C. Johnstone, R. Heney and Rodgers.
