Wainui and Poolta Call The Wainui, from Oamaru, called at the Port of Timaru yesterday to load for Wellington, Gisborne and Napier, and sailed in the afternoon for Lyttelton. She will sail the same day for Lyttelton. From Dunedin the Holmlea will arrive on Tuesday to load for Wellington, New Plymouth and Waikato Heads, via Lyttelton. NEW SWEDISH MOTOR SHIP KOOKABURRA LAUNCHED The Trans-Atlantic S.S. Co., Ltd., Gothenburg, announces the successful launching of the new fast motor vessel Kookaburra. The new vessel has been built principally for the Pacific Australian Direct Line, which trades from Pacific Coast ports to main Australian ports.- She is to have accommodation for a limited number of first saloon passengers and will be elaborately fitted out. The overall length of the vessel is 432 ft 4in., with a dead-weight lifting of 9165 tons, and a cubic capacity for cargo of 574,851 c. ft. Her engines comprise seven-cylinder Diesel motors, solid injection, two cycle double-acting. It is expected that the Kookaburra will visit Australia about-September. LONDON’S SHIPPING During the week ended January 27, S2B vessels, representing 1,049,084 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these, 561 vessels (847,322 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports, and 412 vessels (201,762 net register tons) were engaged in Coastwise traffic. The arrivals included eight meat cargoes—viz., five from Australia, one from New Zealand, and two from South America, comprising 295,000 carcases of lamb and mutton. 104,000 quarters of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits, and sundries. Twelve timber-laden vessels docked in the Surrey commercial docks with 26,000 tons of softwood. Over 42,000,000 tons of goods were dealt with in the Port of London during 1938.
