Feb. 11—Canterbury Park T.C. Feb. 18—New Brighton T.C. First race at Washdyke to-day at 12.15. Trains will run to the racecourse to-day, leaving Timaru at 11.7, 11.33, 12.8 and 12.40. • * • • There will be trotting to-day at Washdyke and Cambridge and racing at Omakau (Vincent County). C. T. Wilson has been appointed first horseman for Cutts’ brothers’ stable, in succession to G. H. Humphries. * * • • Janet Gaynor, winner of seven races last season, has not been in the money in seven starts during the current term, and she has been sent out for a spell. New Note, while rolling in a paddock after arriving at Omakau, cut one of his legs, and had to be scratched for the Ophir Handicap at the Vincent meeting. Auctor, who appeared to have a good chance in the Apprentices’ Plate at Trentham, is an unlikely starter, as he is still feeling the effects of a bump in the Wyndham Cup. John Peel (Foxbridge-Hyades), who cost two Sydney owners 1000 gns at the Trentham sales a year ago, made his first appearance in a two-year-old handicap at Randwick at New Year, but missed a place. • • • • Conditions for the opening day of the Vincent County fixture were very different from those ruling in 1938. A year ago the meeting was held in blistering weather, with the shade temperature verging on 100, but yesterday the wind was cool and the sky slightly overcast. • • • • Hastings’ much-boomed pair of hacks, Hagen and Stemchase, both strrck trouble which prevented them from racing at the New Year. Hagen has been treated to a light blister and Stemchase has been eased in his work. However, the latter has been entered for Trentham next week. • * » « Catalogue has won at Trentham, but the course has been a somewhat unlucky one for him. Two years ago he was beaten only by Reipar in the Champion Hack Cup, 11 furlongs, and last year he was second to Padishah in the Wellington Cup, carrying 8.3, and second to Davolo in the Autumn Handicap, 11 furlongs, carrying 8.5. • • • • Centrepoise is claimed to be the most Improved galloper in Hastings, and he can be depended upon to represent that centre worthily in the Dou.i Hack Cup and, two days later, in the Gorge Hack Cup at Ashhurst. Ir both races he will be ridden by C. P. Sheild, who has piloted this Hunting Song gelding to his three successes this season. The Lord Warden gelding Flagman, in D. P. Wilson’s stable, who was twice solidly supported at Southland meetings, was again made favourite for the novice event at Omakau. Flagman was first to begin and after a lengthy duel with Lawford Lass he beat the Oamaru filly comfortably by a length, with Attractive Note nearly three lengths away. • • • « Swordstick won his first race for D. P. Wilson—and his first for a long time—when he captured the Omakau Handicap yesterday. Travenna attempted to lead all the way but Swordstick was never further back than third, and finished generously to win by a length from Hanlon, who got up to defeat Travenna by the same margin. The favourite Valantua was fourth. • • « « The favourite for the Cambridge Handicap to-day will almost undoubtedly be Peter Smith, who registered a winning performance of 4.31 at Epsom, but unusual interest will be taken in the appearance of Uenuku and Equipoise. Uenuku won in 3.13 2-5 after twice being runner-up to Van Derby, and Equipoise is hailed as one of the most promising pacers in the north. Local sentiment was responsible for Valmarch being installed favourite for the Matakanui Handicap at Omakau. He got much the best of a walk-in start (in which Queen Dorothy was very badly served), and won by two lengths from Invoice, who ran into second place rounding the top. Song Boy, who was one of those slowest to begin, was running on in third place. The initial advantage secured by Valmarch made him look a winner from the outset. • • • • The Gore pacer April Direct, who was second to Aspirant during the holidays, was the popular candidate for the New Year Trot at Omakau. Safe Voyage, who galloped in the early stages, settled down in front, and led April Direct into the straight, but the favourite then took charge and won easily from Central Lad, who finished

strongly and beat Safe Voyage tor second. The Washdyke representative Royal Flush was fourth, but he prejudiced his chance by beginning badly. The Washdyke pacer Rowi (who was omitted from the racebook at Omakau) registered an attractive victory in the Vincent Trotting Stakes. Mandrell, Happy Erin, Rowi, Central Lad and Bonny le Roy comprised the leading division when half the distance had been completed. Three furlongs from home Mandrell was leading from Happy Ena, but Central Lad and Rowi were first into the straight, and Rowi (P. Gallagher), had no difficulty in beating Central Lad by a length and a half, with Mandrell about five lengths away. • • • • Gipsy Fair and Philaster were responsible for delay at the start of the Ophir Handicap at Omakau, and eventually they were penalised by losing some lengths. Violenta soon took command from Adina and Gusto, and across the top the order was Violenta, Adina, Gipsy Fair. Adina led Gipsy Fair and Violenta to the straight, and galloped away to win by two and a half lengths from Atua Rere, who got up to beat Violenta by a head for second money. Prince Flaneur was fourth, then came Remembo and Gipsy Fair. All going well with him after his arrival at Melbourne, the first race High Caste may be called upon to contest in Australia may be the Futurity Stakes, of £3OOO, weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances, seven furlongs, at Caulfield on February 25. The race is one that is seldom attempted by two-year-olds, and the last winner of that age was Palmer, by Pilgrim’s Progress, who won in 1900, and carried 5.12. High Caste will be thoroughly tested if opposed to Ajax, and a real line on his worth should be secured from his form in Melbourne. If his connections decide to miss the Futurity Stakes, there are richly-endowed two-year-old races such as the V.R.C. and A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes that should suit him. ELDERSLIE STUD SALE STALLIONS PASSED IN YEARLINGS SELL CHEAPLY The dispersal sale of the Elderslie Stud took place in fine weather, and a fairly large attendance assembled at the ringside, including representatives of Australian buyers. Most of the mares with foals at foot sold well within value, and the market was in favour if the purchaser. The yearlings sold cheaply, and Solicitor General and Iliad, although much admired when in the ring, failed to reach figures near the vendors’ value. Solicitor General opened at lOOOgns and rose by bids of lOOgns to 1700gns, but was sent out of the ring. Iliad also went out unsold.
