TENNIS CHAMPIONS
Matches in Australia QUIST DEFEATS BROMWICH Just when John Bromwich, the New South Wales tennis champion, was being declared invincible by all the critics, he experienced one of those setbacks which confront all champions, says a Victorian writer. When he and Crawford trounced Adrian Quist and Harry Hopman in the Inter-State match, Victoria v. New South Wales, 6-2, 6-4, there was no sign that the new and the old champions were not in form, and Hopman and Quist could not make any impression on them. In the singles, however, in the match New South Wales v. South Australia, Bromwich had to play all he knew to beat Len Schwartz. He won the first set 6-4, but Schwartz took -the second 9-7. In the third set Schwartz delighted the onlookers by his persistence and enterprise, and with the score 3all looked to have a chance, but the champion, scenting danger, steadied and took the set and the match. 6-3. It was a pleasure to see Jack Crawford playing so keenly against Don Turnbull. His graceful and fluent stroking provided a fine contrast to the robust hitting of Turnbull. It appeared that the wind affected Crawford’s strokes far more than those of Turnbull. In spite of lack of hard practice, Turnbull played particularly well, but was beaten 13-11, 3-6, 6-3. Bromwich met his Waterloo when Quist beat him in the New South Wales v. Victoria match, 7-5, 6-4. Quist owed his victory to a change of tactics —“greater patience.” He has suddenly discovered that he can wage baseline rallies with Bromwich. He is faster in covering the court than Bromwich, and can be almost as accurate, so why should he be in such a hurry to get to the net? Quist held Bromwich well in the driving duels, and, when he did go in, it was behind shots which made Bromwich stretch to the utmost. Then he volleyed and smashed beautifully. His service was also splendid, although he still appears to be leaving the ground when he strives for extra speed.
