VIOLENT GALE

VICTORIA SWEPT BY DUST STORM

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright

(Received December 10, 12.44 a.m.) MELBOURNE, December 9.

A violent northerly gale swept Victoria to-day, bringing the city the worst duststorm in many years, obscuring the sun throughout the day. In country districts a 90 mile velocity was reached, downing telegraph and telephone poles and cutting off communication with other States. Shop windows were blown in. In the city and suburbs houses were unroofed. Light rain in the evening caused many motor accidents by greasing the dust covered roads.

The Maunganui, which was due on Friday morning has been delayed by the gale and is not expected till Saturday.
