WHO ARE WAR MONGERS?

REPLY TO HERR HITLER'S CHARGES MR CHURCHILL HITS OUT British Official Wireless (Received November 8, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 7. “Herr Hitler is quite mistaken in supposing that Mr R. A. Eden, Mr A. Duff Cooper, myself and the leaders of the Liberal and Labour Parties are warmongers,” states Mr Winston Churchill in reply to criticism by the Fuhrer. “Not one of us had ever dreamed of an act of aggression against Germany. We are. however, concerned to make sure that our own country is properly defended, so that we can be safe and free and also help others to whom we are bound. “Herr Hitler ought to understand this mood and respect it. I have always said that if Britain were defeated in war I hoped that we should find a Hitler to lead us back to our rightful position among the nations. I am sorry, however, that he has not been mellowed by the great success that has attended him. The whole world would rejoice to see the Hitler of peace and tolerance, and nothing would adorn his name in world history so much as acts of magnanimity, mercy and pity to the forlorn, and friendliness to the weak and poor.” In a iater passage, Mr Churchill states: “Let this great man search his own heart and conscience before he accuses anyone of being a warmonger. The whole peoples of the British Empire and the French Republic earnestly desire to dwell in peace, side and side with the German nation, but they are also resolved to put themselves in a position to defend their rights and long established civilisations. They do not mean to be in anybody’s power.” LABOUR LEADER’S REPLY DENIAL OF ACCUSATION United Press Ass. .melon—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 8, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 8. Mr A. Greenwood (Deputy-Leader of the Opposition), in the House of Commons, replying to Herr Hitler, denied ever saying that he wanted to see Italy and Germany destroyed. Speaking at a Nazi Party rally on Sunday, Herr Hitler made an attack on Mr Winston Churchill and Mr Greenwood, accusing the latter of saying that he had not concealed the fact that he wanted to see Italy and Germany destroyed. NEW ARMAMENT FEVER GERMAN CRITICISM OF DEMOCRACIES United Preea Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 8, 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, November 8. Herr von Ribbentrop, addressing foreign press representatives, referred to the new armament fever of several nations and stated: “We must unfortunately recognise that these warmongers are concerned lest Germany’s just demand for colonies may be fulfilled.”
