WILL MONARCHY RETURN ?
LIVELY RUMOURS IN HUNGARY Regent Has Eyes on Throne Sequel to Gestures of Dictators United Press Association—Br Electric Telegraph—Copyright WARSAW, November 3. The newspaper “Goniec Warszawski,” which is usually reliable, publishes a story from Budapest that Hungary is preparing to restore the monarchy, the Regent, Admiral Horthy becoming Nicholas I. The paper adds that Admiral Horthy in preparation for his coronation, became a Catholic two months ago. It is pointed out that Hungary has never renounced monarchism which it intended to restore as soon as the Treaty of Triano was revised. Nazi Movement Suppressed An attempt by Hungarian Nazis . have the Regent of Hungary. Admiral Nicholas Horthy, proclaimed King, was sternly repressed by the authorities in December of last year. A large meeting of Nazis made the proclamation, but the police intervened, and arrested twelve of the leaders. The then Prime Minister (Dr. 'Daranyi) told the Upper House tha: anyone introducing th question of a monarchy was not serving his country. After the war Hungary had a varied career. King Charles abdicated in November, 1918. after a revolution, and Hungary was proclaimed an independent republic. For a breief space in 1919 there was a Soviet Government but in August 1919. a National Government was formed and it was decided to carry on the monarchial constitution without a king until the people were freed from external pressure. Admiral Without Navy Admiral Nicholas Horthy de Nagbanya is Admiral of a country without any coastline and Regent to a nonexistent King. His adiniral’s rank dates from the time when Horthy. the son of a Transylvanian far.ily of the lesser nobility, rose to be first naval W.C. to the Emperor Franz Josef, and, during the war. commander of the Austro-Hungarian fleet. The Regency dates from 1920. Admiral Horthy headed the reactionary forces which overthrew the Communist Government of Bela Kun and carried out the ruthless White Tenor. The old monarchial constitution of Hungary was restored, with the throne left vacant, intended ultimately for the Hapsburgs again. The functions of the monarchy are exercised by the Regent, to which position Admiral Horthy waelected in 1920.
