COUNTRYWOMEN TO ASSEMBLE

CONFERENCE IN LONDON From all over the world women will flock to London next year. In 29 countries farm women are saving for the conference of the Associated Country Women of the World. This society, known as the A.C.W.W., embraces all the country women’s societies in existence. In New Zealand it includes the women’s institutes and the women’s divisions of the New Zealand Farmer’s Union.

Every three years this great meeting takes place. Last time 8000 women assembled in Washington, U.S.A., where the President of the United States, Mr Franklin Roosevelt, and Mrs Roosevelt opened the proceeding, and subsequently entertained 6000 visitors at the largest party ever held in the official residence.

Already the Canadian and U.S.A, sections are booking passages on the Queen Mary. News comes that the African contingent have taken a whole ship. From Estonia, Finland, Kenya, Latavia, Denmark, and Rumania, to name a few places, delegates are expected in quantity. The British women’s institutes have offered hospitality to the delegates from June 10 to 19. Between June 19 and June 30 visits will be made to Scotland and Ireland.

During the conference many distinguished people will entertain parties of delegates. The society is fortunate in having the interest of the ambassadors of several countries, and parties are being given throughout the year at the London Embassies for members of the Country Women of the World.

The official organ of the society, “The Countrywoman,” contains many interesting plans for events. Items of special interest are printed in English, French, and German. Illustrations show countrywomen of many lands at their work, at play, and in their homes. The women’s institutes of New Zealand are planning a monster delegation to attend this great meeting, the party leaving by the Arawa on April 16, 1939, and arriving in England on May 10, in time for the English spring. Members expect to attend the conference and enjoy the hospitality of the British women’s institutes, and even, possibly, of foreign societies. Great interest is being shown by countrywomen all over New Zealand.
