FAULTY INOCULATION

PULPY KIDNEY TREATMENT CARE NEEDED TO AVOID REJECTION The practice of inoculating lambs as • preventive of entero-toxaemla (pulpy kidney) is winning to considerable popularity in the Dominion, as definitely beneficial results have been proved. The practice of Inoculation Is still more popular in parts of Australia where fat lambs are bred for export. It is reported, however, that, during the past season, the damage caused by careless and faulty methods of inoculation was responsible for numerous rejections of export lamb at the works. Such damage usually takes the form of abscess formation or of oedema (serious infiltration of the tissues) surrounding the seat of vaccination, necessitating either the condemnation or the rejection of the lamb for export. Bad results, it is said, are likely to occur when the seat of inoculation is in the vicinity of the shoulder, and this site should be avoided. Provided care is used, the best position for inoculation is said to be on the inside of the hind leg (thigh), but precautions should be taken to see that the needle is sterilised and that it is inserted subcutaneously only, and not deeply into the underlying tissues. This can best be achieved by lifting a fold of the skin with the fingers and inserting the needle parallel with the surface of the leg, and so as not to penetrate the muscle.
